About Young Scholars

Young Scholars LPP is a multi-year collaborative project, established in 1993 with Utica College and the Utica City School District. This program is designed by education professionals to motivate diverse and talented students to stay in school, earn a New York State Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, and pursue post-secondary education. Young Scholars students participate in a comprehensive program providing academic, social, and cultural enrichment.

Our Charity Bib Mission

What our charity will do with the donations raised through the Boilermaker Charity Bib Program:

Bibs will support the YS Healthy Eating Initiative (HEI) for 180 middle school students who are attending the Young Scholars Summer Program. We recently initiated the HEI which combines mini lessons on healthy eating with a safe, non-judgmental environment for the students to learn how to make those choices. We partner with the college food service provider to offer healthy options for lunch. After students choose their food they describe to their teacher assistant how those choices reflect what they have learned. The TA’s use the student data to track the impact by the increase in the number of food groups students choose, the increase in the percentage of fruits and vegetables chosen and the decrease in sugary drinks. With 40% of Utica city children reported as obese or overweight, learning how to translate the information on healthy eating to what they put on their plate is an important lesson.
